Monday 27th March marked a great date for sport at Smestow School. 12 students from Years 7 and 8 have been training for just over half a term in preparation for the city gymnastics event.
Six students took part in the beginner category and six took part in the novice category. The beginners had to master a set floor routine that had 10 skills within it. They then had two choices of vault to perform.
The novice gymnasts had an immediate challenge of creating their own routine from a list of required skills that had to be performed to music.
All students regularly attend training and demonstrated the perseverance and discipline that is required during the training sessions.
Throughout the competition the students were overwhelmed with the abundance of talent that our City boasts. In each category all pupils performed to an exemplary standard.
It is with great delight that we came away from the competition with three medals.
The bronze medal was awarded to Scarlett Bennett – for best overall marks in combination of beginner floor and vault.
The silver medal was awarded to Amelia Rogers – for beginner vault.
Finally, the gold medal was awarded to Scarlett Bennett – for beginner floor.
PE teacher, Miss O’Connor, says: “It has been a pleasure to work with such enthusiastic young people. Congratulations girls!”
