In the third of our series of articles catching up with former Smestow pupils, we meet Alice Power who was at school from 2005 to 2012, which in her words “feels like a lifetime ago!” Alice, it’s over to you…

Since leaving Smestow I went on to study English Language at the University of Birmingham where I graduated with a First Class Honours degree in 2015. I was also selected as one of the top 12 graduating students out of 7,000 peers in my year group which I was extremely proud of.

I then furthered my study of English Language and Applied Linguistics and achieved a Masters distinction in 2016, again from Birmingham University. During my four years at University, I was awarded three scholarships to contribute to the research of some of the best Language and Linguistics Scholars in the country.

Being a student was the best time of my life and I would highly recommend it to everyone. I didn’t achieve the best A-level results but with a lot of ambition and determination, I achieved everything possible at university (and beyond!).

Since graduating in September 2016, I have been gaining experience as a Specialist Recruitment Consultant for Hays. I work with companies like Jaguar Land Rover and HSBC to appoint Project and Programme Managers into high-level positions. I love working in Birmingham everyday and meeting lots of interesting people in my job.

At Smestow, I wanted to go on and become a teacher or a lecturer but having studied for four years, I decided instead that I wanted to a pursue a career in Human Resource Management (HR). My current recruitment experience has therefore opened a lot of doors for me whilst pushing me out of my comfort zone.

This September, I will be moving away from Wolverhampton to live near London where I will work as a HR Graduate Trainee for ABF ‘Associated British Foods’. They are a global manufacturing company who own Primark and a lot of our household brands including Twinings, Dorset Cereals, and Kingsmill bread.

In five years’ time, I can expect to be Senior HR Manager. I am extremely excited to start my dream job!

All the staff in Smestow have contributed to who I am today. They have helped shape me into a well-rounded, confident, intelligent, and resilient individual.

Smestow gave me an endless amount of support and aspiration to achieve my short-term and long-term goals particularly when I had to overcome some very difficult times.

Smestow is extremely good at recognising and nurturing, talent and ambition in everyone. This, alongside my drive to succeed, has helped make me who I am today. I am so proud of what I have achieved so far in my life and I will always thank the staff at Smestow for this.
