The Smestow Year 9s started their league defence in style with a 3-1 victory at St Edmunds. With conditions very much against the lads’ style of play; it took them a while to adapt. This was evident when St Edmunds took an early lead with a strike from the edge of the box that goalkeeper Billy Roberts couldn’t do anything about. Conceding the goal woke the lads up and they quickly worked out that it wasn’t an evening for the total football that they usually play but for getting the ball behind the defence and using the pace that we had in forward areas. After a number of chances, Josh Parkes latched onto a through ball and chipped it past the on-rushing keeper to level the scoreline. A couple of minutes later, it was the exact same; this time Connor Parker playing a brilliant through ball to Josh which resulted in the same outcome! 2-1 to Smestow half time.
The second half was complete dominance from our boys and they should have been out of sight, however with us not taking the chances, Lucas Westwood and Lewis Fellows still had to be resolute at the back and dealt with anything that St Edmunds had to throw at us. The third goal did eventually come from Kaviel Noel latching onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Josh Cooke and like the first two goals; Kaviel put the ball over the keeper to make it 3-1. A number of changes then saw the whole squad have a good run-out in the first game of the season. The boys now look to build on this great start with more league matches and an important cup game before October Half Term.
