On the 5th March, the U18 Boys travelled over to The Walsall Campus of University of Wolverhampton to take part in the Black Country Futsal Finals. Over 25 teams had entered this competition prior to this so to make it to the top 5 is already a remarkable achievement even before kicking a ball at the university.
The first game was against Sandwell Academy which was unfortunate for the lads as we knew they would be a very strong team and the lads did need to get used to the competition. Smestow’s only loss of the competition came in this game where they lost 4-1; Sajad did grab a consolation goal towards the end of the game but with more clinical finishing and maybe a game to find their feet the boys could have full well have grabbed a point from this game or maybe even a win which would have had an influence in their final position in the rankings.
The second game came against the eventual winners of the competition; Walsall Academy. The lads looked much more comfortable in this one and were the better team over the 12 minutes! Sajad got himself his second goal of the competition with a great finish to bring us back level with Walsall for Smestow to then take the ascendency in the match. The boys were very unfortunate to not come out as winners in this game, having some very good chances denied by a very impressive Walsall goalkeeper.
Health Futures were the third opponents for Smestow. The lads were nearly their own worst enemy with again having a number of chances throughout the game and not being clinical enough. However, they did eventually pick up their first 3 points of the afternoon with a 3-2 win. Sajad carried on his 100% goal record for the tournament with Reiss getting the other two goals with 2 excellent finishes with either foot. The boys were really starting to play some brilliant football and were ruing their chances in the first two games after they had proven to themselves in this game what they were capable of.
The lads carried this on into the last game of the tournament with a convincing 5-1 win over Heath Park. The boys started excellently with an early goal from that man again (Sajad). Reiss secured his second brace in as many games and then finally Vivek & Joe got themselves on the scoresheet. The lads really deserved this score line and was great to finish the day off with such a pleasing performance.
A special mention must go to Nick who stepped into goal at very late notice to help the lads, also Mr Webb’s choice of Man of the Tournament went to Will Jennings who was outstanding in defence throughout the tournament and started every attack for the other lads to go and get the glory with the goals.
An excellent achievement and performance from the lads who should be very proud of themselves not only in this round but the round before. The first Smestow team in a number of years to make it to the Black Country Finals and to finish 3rd in the county is outstanding.
