People
At University of Wolverhampton, Smestow Academy, we promote Personal Wellbeing and Development through a comprehensive and bespoke programme of learning entitled Building People. This incorporates Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and also extensive Careers Guidance. We work closely with our students to identify their goals and build skills and knowledge to help them achieve them. Our Smestow Values of Respect, Resilience, Integrity, Honesty and Accountability are at the core of Building People.
'Building People' is taught at the Academy in every year group and is monitored and reviewed regularly by the staff and governing body. It is delivered by Form Tutors and supported by specialist guest speakers, such as the School Nurse and School Careers Advisor.
RSHE is a statutory subject that gives young people the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive lives and meet their full potential. RSHE lessons, which are part of this programme, cover topics including: healthy relationships; families; growing up, including puberty; personal hygiene; changing feelings; health, including diet, exercise and addiction; becoming more independent; keeping safe online; developing self-esteem; mental wellbeing, UK law, British values, human rights, first aid and personal finance. Sex Education is delivered by specially trained speakers in a sensitive manner, so that young people can grow up fully informed of sexual health, UK law and boundaries. Examples of our Building People: RSHE lessons can be found below. Parents can withdraw their child from the Sex Education element of Building People by emailing enquiries@smestow.uwmat.co.uk. More details can be found within the Academy Policy below.
We believe that a well-planned Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance programme plays a major contribution in preparing young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. It is instrumental in helping young people make decisions and manage transitions as learners and as members of the workplace. With the introduction of more flexible routes for 14-19-year-olds, it is vital that young people have the knowledge and skills they need to make informed choices.
Students will focus specifically upon Careers Education and Guidance as part of the Building People programme. In addition, they will have many opportunities to participate in a wider programme of activities and events throughout the academic year to support their career choices.
As a school community, we are committed to working in partnership with parents and the wider community to best meet the needs of our students. Student wellbeing is paramount and Building People ensures that our students receive a holistic and ambitious curriculum, filled with opportunities to develop and succeed. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact us.
